Nyakach
is located in western part of Kenya, Nyanza province near the shores
of Lake Victoria which is the largest fresh water lake in the whole
Africa. This place is dominated by a tribe called Luo community
and their main local language is Dholuo. The main economic activities
of this tribe is fishing and small scale farming, the tribe migrated
from southern Sudan in the early ages and walked along river Nile
till they settled along the lake Victoria to do fishing there and
since then they have lived here for years now.
The place has been highly hit by the HIV/ aids disease and in
the recent past and the prevalence rate has really made it possible
for the rising number of orphaned children in the area, in most
schools in Nyakach the ration of an orphaned child is so high
an you find that in every one out of two pupils/students has either
lost both or one of his/her parents and is now either total orphan
or half orphan. It’s due to this fact that most of these
children find themselves left alone to survive and in most cases
they would resort to seeking assistance from either some close
relatives or to live with their grandparents. In some cases even
these other relatives may also pass away leaving these orphans
alone to survive on their own and in such circumstances they would
resort to finding an alternative means of survival hence dropping
out of school to either go and be a fisherman at the lake which
really exposes him/her to the HIV virus since the prevalence rate
is so high among the fishermen community due to their life style
and ignorance due to the fact that most of them nearly
99% have at one time dropped out of school in
their early childhood. The only surviving lots who have not been
so far hit by the deadly HIV virus are the elderly who are now
forced to be parents again since the active lot has really been
swept away by this deadly disease and the most affected age bracket
is between 25-45 years olds. Most of them have so far succumbed
to death leaving behind the old and the young children alone in
the society.
These old grandmothers and grandfathers who are left to take
care of these children are unable to provide them with the necessities
that they would need to enable them perform better at school.
These old lot are very old to work on the farms and to go fishing
which are the main activities in the area. Its therefore vivid
that these kids are left to suffer due to lack of support and
ends up suffering a lot and cannot therefore fully participate
at school programs hence they need external support from well
wishers who would real offer the much needed help for them to
succeed in life and be independent in their future lives.
Due to frustrations in life some of these kids end up leaving
school and resort to other means of survival which are too risky
for their lives and hence not recommendable most of these kids
may end up going to live in the streets in the nearby Kisumu city
and some ends up at the lake Victoria shores to start fishing
activities there at that very tender ages. Their potentials to
do better in life end up vaguely like that and they would live
the rest of their lives suffering like that till death. Even if
one is blessed to survive the primary school going but at the
end of her/his primary schooling he/she would not be able to continue
to secondary school since the fees at secondary is so high that
the guardians (grandparents) would not be able to afford hence
at long last still he /she would end up being at the shores of
the lake Victoria and start a very dangerous lifestyle which would
make him/her vulnerable to HIV/aids and may then end up dying
of HIV/aids like the parents and this is the worse situation that
we would like to revert in most of these children living in these
situations its just due to fate that they find themselves in such
situations in life at this tender ages. Even those Attending schools
would not be able to afford the vital meals a day since most of
the guardians are overwhelmed with the responsibility of taking
care of them and feeding them appropriately.
With this project we would bring hope to these hopeless lot in
Nyakach and this would change the lives of these children accordingly
hence enable them to be independent in their future lives. This
is the only hope they have to succeed in their lives and we have
come out to do just that for their sole prosperity. With the project
the orphaned kids would be able to get the most vital service
in life that’s quality education since he/she would be able
to get all the basic educational needs to enable her/him do well
at school. A small amount in western terms would go along way
to help a desperate orphaned child in Nyakach. For only US$
20 a month or US$ 65 Term a sponsor would be able
to help an orphaned child in Nyakach Kenya, this would be enough
on monthly basis to provide the orphaned child with all the basic
school needs and to cater for all the expenses at school like,
paying for the feeding program at school, providing basic health
care and hence the child would be so comfortable at school for
a whole month/Term.
