We are a self help group who
are determined to creating the much needed change in Nyakach
Kenya. We are currently doing some projects in the area and
we are determined to solving some of the problems that Nyakach
is facing currently.
Here is a list of our projects:
1. Peace Kids Nursery and Day Care Centre
This was an initiative of Kindu Self Help Group. (KISHEG.) Members
who saw the real need to start a Nursery School cum Day Care Centre
in the village which would offer the much needed Early Childhood
Development (E.C.D) to these vulnerable children for free, the
project targeted mostly the orphans in the area who are unable
to afford school fees to attain this basic education. The school
has enrolled more than seventy children who are now attending
classes at the centre. There are two volunteer teachers teaching
at the centre and are helping these needy children to acquire
the quality basic education.
These needy children attending the school are being taught at
no cost as they are paying absolutely nothing to the services
they are getting. We are planning to have a feeding program introduced
to the peace kids’ centre as soon as possible and we have
a maize farm which would produce some maize this year to kick
off the program. It’s very worrying to find that most of
these children lack enough food and would go without food for
a day or two at their various homes since they come from very
poor back ground and their guardians are unable to provide consecutive
meals, they just have to skip some meals just because they would
not afford it. It’s hardly possible to find them get all
the three meals a day at their various homes and therefore its
high time to start this much needed feeding program for these
needy children at the centre, this would go along way to ensure
that they would be able to have at least be assured of lunch meal
everyday and hence reduce the suffering a bit.
2. Agricultural projects
We have embarked to maize farming from late
last year and it will be ready soon for harvesting in the next
few months, this maize would be used for feeding the needy children
at Peace Kids Centre, though Its not at large scale but we hope
to expand the project so that we can have enough food supply for
these kids at the centre for a whole year. This was an initiative
started by the members of Kindu Self Help Group so that we may
join hands in ensuring that these kids get something to eat when
at school. Last year we tried to do the same off season and the
yield did not materialize since the drought made them to wither
before harvesting.
We also grow tomatoes on small scale and this
we do sell at the local market and we use the money to sustain
our projects, the only problem with this project is lack of adequate
rainfall in Nyakach but we do try as much as possible to water
the farm using water drawn from the nearby river Sondu Miriu using
donkey to transport it from the river to our farm which is not
quite far away fro m this river. We also plan to have a water
pump that would enable us water our tomatoes everyday and this
would enable us grow in large scale for the local market and to
feed the villagers too. By embarking to this intensive farming
and we would be able grow even vegetable to supplement the food
used for feeding the children at peace kids centre. This would
really help in keeping good diet for these needy children at the
centre.
This has been started by one of our group member
who has opened a stall in Nairobi, Kenya to train youths from
Nyakach who are unable to find jobs after school or school drop
outs. They are trained top be self employed, there are currently
five trainees at the stall which is located in Nairobi Eastland’s,
at the completion of this course the youths trained here are able
to start their own embroidery and tailoring shops/stalls and be
self employed. This project would really go along way to solve
the increasing number of the orphans in Nyakach who are unable
to continue with their education due to lack of school fees, it’s
serving as a bridge to success in life for the needy children
in Nyakach. The payments are usually very friendly as what the
trainer needs is to get a calf from the parent or the guardian
of the child being trained in exchange to the full course. He
has volunteered to help them in this way after he was convinced
that this way he too would be contributing to this needed change
that Kindu Self Help Group has initiated because it has to start
from us members of the group and grow like that to the outside
world.
We intend to start selling these clothes online
and to the outside markets as soon as may be able to establish
that by doing this we shall be able to offer employment to many
of the trainees in the course, also intend to use some percentage
accrued from these sales to support the lunch program at the peace
kids centre. If you would like to buy some please go to the samples

will be touching the lives of these desperate and vulnerable children
in Nyakach Kenya.
3. HIV/Aids Campaigns
We at Kindu Self Help Group do carry out some HIV/Aids
camping’s in Nyakach Kenya, this is mainly done to inform
the community on the dangers of HIV/Aids and how to be safe from
it, We do carry out some various events at the community level such
as sports help bring people together and educate them on HIV/Aids
issues for free. We also intend to involve the constituency and
district aids committees in this project so that some of our members
may be able to get some vital training to enable them carry out
these activity with some professionalism. So far we do visit HIV/Aids
patients in their homes and offer advice to them on how they can
prolong their lives by living positively. We do make them to be
aware that they can start taking ARV's which are now available at
the divisional and district hospitals in Kenya at no cost. The government
of Kenya has made these drugs available for free but due to ignorance
at the village level you find that some patients are yet unaware
of this.
We do take these awareness campaigns to the local
level possible to inform these patients that there are drugs which
can make them live longer life than they expect. Some whom have
started using the ARV's are really doing so well health wise and
its good that they actually do appreciate that fact that they can
still live positively despite the fact that they have the HIV virus.
This if continued can really create a big change to the whole community
towards the attitude and hence reduce the stigma among HIV/aids
patients. you find that in Luo community most of the Aids patients
are still trying to find excuses on which disease they are suffering
from due to the rooted cultural beliefs that enables them to find
one excuse to another about what is making them ill. This makes
them not to accept the real issue about HIV/Aids and there is still
need to do lots of campaigns in this regard to reduce the prevalence
rate. There are some traditional practices in Luo community that
have really accelerated the HIV/Aids prevalence rate in the area
and there is need to address them through intensive campaigns in
the area.
Kindu Self Help Group plans to collaborate with
both district and constituency aids control committees to start
on a thorough program to curb the situation. These would involve
very serious HIV/Aids campaigns in Nyakach and the main aim would
be to reach the most remotes places that are Unreachable because
they are the most hit by the scourge. These places cannot be reached
by road hence they are left behind in most national campaigns involving
HIV/aids awareness in the region. We are planning to go to the grassroots
level to carry out these much needed awareness campaigns. |
